Recall Visits for Periodontal (Gum) Disease Management

What is a Recall Visit?

A recall visit consists of a maintenance appointment where the stains and plaque buildup on the surfaces of the teeth are removed. Recall visits are necessary to control the presence of gum disease. We are able to do this by controlling the levels of harmful bacteria in the mouth.

What is a cleaning?

There actually is no such thing as a "cleaning", there is only gum treatment. I am often asked by patients for a cleaning. Often times we use this term because our teeth are "clean" when the treatment is completed.

It is important we distinguish between periodontal treatment and a simple polish (prophylaxis):

What determines my recall schedule?

The overall health of the gums are what will determine the type of treatment needed and the type of treatment needed will determine the necessary recall schedule. The complexity of each case is different from individual to individual. Periodontal disease occurs in stages and over time will increase in severity if left untreated.

What are the common recall schedules?

When a comprehensive gum treatment is needed, Dr. Warren will determine the recall schedule.

Why are recall visits important?

Recall visits are very important to maintain the overall health of your teeth and gums. When we have the opportunity to catch problems early, we can offer conservative treatments that have desired outcomes and predictable results. One fact is clear, routine visits for examinations, x-rays, and periodontal maintenance will help you keep your teeth for a lifetime.
